If an applicant declines to complete the Konfir journey, the next step for the party communicating with the applicant (Konfir or you) will depend on why the applicant is refusing.

In most cases, concerns can be easily addressed, but fallback options should be made available when needed.

Step 1: Understand the reason

Ask the applicant why they’re not proceeding. Common reasons include:

Reason

Suggested Response

“I don’t know what this is”

Explain to the applicant:

  • Who created the verification (i.e. you)

  • What the purpose of the verification is (e.g. part of your screening process)

  • Why it's important (e.g. proceed quickly, prevent fraud)

See: How to explain Konfir Verify to stakeholders

“I don’t want to share that data”

Reassure the applicant:

  • They are in control of their data

  • They can skip any data sources they’re uncomfortable with

  • Only verification-specific data is shared

  • For all data sources, no ongoing access is maintained

“I’d prefer to upload documents”

Highlight to the applicant:

  • With Konfir - only verification-specific data is shared, via secure APIs, and with strict access controls.

  • With Documents - data disclosure is increased, data is shared via insecure channels (i.e. email) and without access control.

Step 2: Offer alternatives if needed

If the applicant still declines to use Konfir:

  • They’ll be redirected back to you at the end of the journey

  • You can initiate a fallback verification method (e.g. payslips, P45, employment letter)

Note: Konfir cannot assist with manual document-based checks.

Suggested Response

Thanks for letting us know.

We use Konfir to help verify employment and income securely and with your consent.

You're free to skip any data sources you're not comfortable with. If you'd prefer not to use Konfir at all, we can arrange an alternative manual process - though this may take longer.

Let us know how you’d like to proceed.
