Overview

Applicants can upload documents to Konfir in cases where digital data sources alone may not fully evidence an applicant’s employment or income history - such as non-PAYE work (e.g. sole traders, freelancers, and limited company directors).

Uploaded documents are automatically scanned for fraud signals and validated before relevant data fields are extracted and used in verification.

Availability & Limitations

Currently, document upload is limited to HMRC-issued SA302s (also called a “tax calculation” or “tax computation”).

An SA302 summarises an individual’s taxable income and tax owed for a given tax year, based on their submitted Self Assessment return. It is the industry standard document for evidencing self-employment income.

Applicants can obtain an SA302 through their HMRC online account, provided that they:

  • Are or were self-employed

  • Have completed at least one full tax year

  • Have submitted (and paid) their Self Assessment return

  • Earned over £1,000 from self-employment

  • Completed their Self Assessment tax return via HMRC's online service, not via an accountant or commercial software.

Process

1. Documents requested

Documents are requested only when relevant to the activities being verified and are uploaded by the applicant during the Konfir journey.

Applicants must upload one SA302 per tax year, covering the relevant self-employment period.

2. Documents uploaded

The applicant uses HMRC to download their SA302 document. They then upload the requested documents to Konfir (see Applicant Experience).

3. Fraud checks

Konfir applies structural and technical checks to assess document authenticity. These include:

  • analysing file metadata to understand how the file was created or modified

  • reviewing layout, fonts, and images for signs of alteration

  • validating that key data points and applicant details follow expected patterns

Only documents that pass these checks are used in verification.

4. Data extraction

Konfir extract fields from SA302s to support verification, including name, tax year start/end dates

Note: Income figures are not currently surfaced as extracted fields and must be reviewed by opening the returned SA302 document in Konsole.

5. Result

Konfir returns the following in Konsole (and via API where enabled):

  1. The extracted data

  2. The original SA302 document(s) for review & download
